Minor league baseball, was its entry in the 1950 Down East league. The semi-pro league was formed greatly from the demise of the professional New England League in which the Portland Pilots won the final league playoff and in early 1950, set up a 40 game schedule for each team. The Class B Pilots had a working agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies who had supplied some of its players. When the league folded, Sam Aceto, a Portland contractor and lead owner of the Pilots helped organize a six-team league that included teams from Auburn, Augusta, Kennebunkport, Portland, Sanford and Rochester, NH. Aceto hoped this league would fill the void of quality baseball and to fill seats.
