The Black Box ICD116A is a fiber extender that converts asynchronous RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 signals for transmission over singlemode fiber. It offers a straightforward way to move serial data across long distances while isolating equipment from electrical noise and ground loops.
With support for runs up to 15 kilometers and data rates up to 115.2 kbps, the ICD116A easily bridges control rooms with sensors, PLCs, or remote terminals distributed around a factory, utility yard, or defense site. You can install it in a point to point link or create a fiber ring that includes as many as 31 other units, allowing every station to share the same communication path.
Reliability in harsh environments is a hallmark of this extender. The metal housing carries an IP30 rating, operates in temperatures from -30 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit, and resists shock and vibration. Inside, triple isolation rated at 2 kilovolts safeguards connected devices against surges and eliminates ground loops.
Field configuration is quick. DIP switches let you choose the interface type and termination, and automatic data rate detection adapts to the attached equipment. Once in place, the ICD116A runs silently, providing dependable links for substation relays, generator controls, building automation, or any other system that relies on asynchronous serial communication.
Compliance with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 ensures the extender meets the demanding standards of electrical substations and other critical facilities, giving engineers confidence when downtime is not an option.
